Mike Varshavski, more commonly known as Doctor Mike, gained a small spotlight when he was featured in People’s Magazine as The Sexiest Doctor Alive in 2015. However, this was not the last time we’d hear his name.
Fast forward to today, Doctor Mike reaches nearly seven million subscribers and 800 million views on YouTube, where he shares entertaining content around health, nutrition, and more.
Being a son of immigrant parents, he was no stranger to hard work. But many may be surprised that he had to overcome a great deal of shyness growing up.
I spoke with Mike to discuss his journey from immigrating to the U.S. from Russia to becoming the most famous doctor alive. Here were some lessons that I learned how he grew his online popularity, beyond just hard work and good looks.
Staying true to his roots
Despite the overwhelming success and fame Doctor Mike has achieved, he is still actively practicing as a physician in New York. It not only allows him to feel a direct connection to his audience, but it’s genuinely what he loves to do: help those that are in need.
Authenticity is the number one priority
Most channels with millions of subscribers have a sizable team of editors and production crew to help them scale. Doctor Mike has continued to grow exponentially with a tiny team of just three people.

He believes that this direct connection that he has with his audience is what helped him grow in the first place. It provides a similar experience of sitting down with your own doctor in a private clinic.
Mike has also turned down numerous lucrative sponsorship and business opportunities, as he wouldn’t feel comfortable selling anything that he wouldn’t recommend to his own clients.
Treat your audience like you want to be treated
The health industry is littered with online gurus giving out advice, that often lacks transparency. Mike realized early on that the professional advice he offers carries a lot of weight, especially when shared with millions.
This is why he never gives out specific advice, but general guidance to get people on the right path. Instead of talking about the hot topics of the day that may garner more views, he makes sure he stays away from talking about it if he’s not an expert. In short, he gives his audience the respect that he would want to have from his own doctor.
As Doctor Mike concludes, “My job is to provide the most up-to-date information that I feel confident about to my audience, in a way that resonates with them. I trust that my audience will be able to make the best decisions for themselves.”
