Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak have officially reached the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 with “Leave The Door Open,” their first single together as the super duo Silk Sonic.
The two musicians both have impressive careers on their own, but they decided to try something new, and it was only a few months ago they revealed they’d joined forces to form a new duo, Silk Sonic. A short time after they made the announcement, they dropped their first single, “Leave The Door Open,” and it wasted no time in becoming a big hit for the just-formed band. Now, it’s stepped up to the peak spot on the Hot 100, giving Mars another winner, .Paak his first and, obviously, the first for the duo.
“Leave The Door Open” rises from No. 3 to No. 1 on the latest edition of the Hot 100. The cut gains across all relevant metrics, and when Billboard refreshes all of its charts tomorrow, it will sit at No. 2 on the Digital Song Sales list (behind only BTS’s “Film Out”), No. 2 on the Radio Songs tally and No. 3 on the Streaming Songs roster. The tune was nearly a bestseller on platforms like iTunes and Amazon AMZN , and dedicated fans also bought a physical CD of the single, which contributed to the song’s rise.
Mars and .Paak replace Lil Nas X atop the Hot 100, forcing his new single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” down to second place in its second frame on the tally. Initially, it looked like the pop/hip-hop musician’s second leader was headed for a second turn at No. 1.
Mars and .Paak’s single, which borrows heavily from the R&B/soul/pop that dominated the ‘70s (Silk Sonic’s wardrobe is just as reminiscent of that period as well), is Mars’ eighth No. 1 on the Hot 100, and his first in four years. He previously topped the all-genre tally with “Nothin’ on You” alongside B.o.B., “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man,” “Uptown Funk!” with Mark Ronson and most recently with his own “That’s What I Like.”
MORE FOR YOU
He has now ruled over the Hot 100 as a soloist, as a featured artist and as part of a group, a rare feat among musicians.
“Leave The Door Open” serves as the first single from Silk Sonic’s upcoming debut album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, which is expected at some point in 2021, though details are scarce. The new Hot 100 champion is one of only two songs the band has released, with the other, “Silk Sonic Intro,” not standing out as a regular track most people would focus on.
